Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Burns FAQ's
The main protein sources in Burns are chicken, lamb, fish, venison and duck which are nutritious and highly digestible. Sunflower oil and chicken oil provide essential fatty acids and seaweed provides an organic source of minerals. The formulae are fixed so the ingredients do not alter when cheaper ingredients are available.

Burns products (other than high-energy foods) are low in fat and protein and high in complex carbohydrate. There are no chemical additives. This minimises the amount of waste matter which the body has to eliminate. When metabolised, carbohydrate produces less harmful toxic waste than protein and fat.

Burns - Which is better - Moist food or dried?
How the food is presented is of minor importance compared to what the ingredients are or their proportions. Moist foods tend to be tastier than dry but that is mainly because moist foods tend to be higher in protein and fat. Dry food is more convenient and usually more economical.
When comparing the analysis of moist and dry foods it is necessary to allow for the difference in moisture content.

A moist food with a declared 10% protein and 80% moisture has 10gr. of protein in 20 gr. of dry matter i.e. 50% protein on a dry matter basis.

A dry food with a declared 20% protein and 10 % moisture has 20 gr. of protein in 90gr. of dry matter i.e. 22.2% protein on a dry matter basis.

The dry food although appearing to have twice as much protein actually has half as much protein on a dry-matter basis.

Burns - Why should I change if my dog is fine on it's present food?
Health problems are more likely on a low-quality food and they often develop without showing outward signs. For example, the liver and the kidneys may lose as much as 75% of their function before signs of disease appear.

Burns - My pet is underweight. Should I feed him more?
It is first necessary to establish if the pet really is underweight. There are so many overweight dogs that a fit, lean dog looks underweight. Forget what the charts and scales say. You should be able to feel the dog's ribs with only a thin covering of skin. In a short-coated dog you should not be able to see the ribs and the bones should not be prominent. Many dogs are lean because they are active, not because they need more food. Often, increasing the food intake will reduce the efficiency of digestion so the dog may not put on weight.

Dorwest - Arthritis
Both these conditions are more commonly seen in the older dog or cat, although arthritis can occur in young animals occasionally. The first sign is usually stiffness when getting up after sleeping or exercise with obvious pain in the joints and muscles. Arthritis is typified by inflammation of the joints, usually with swelling, pain and restriction of movement whereas rheumatism affects the muscles and is more noticeable during the colder, wetter Winter months. Both conditions have always be difficult to deal with but herbal medicines given in conjunction with the correct diet is effective in relieving the pain, making movement easier and appears to delay the progress of the condition. Although exercise is beneficial for mobility, it can be painful so should always be gentle and somewhat restricted. Mixed Vegetable tablets should be given daily to reduce acidity, relieve the pain and make movement easier. These should be given in conjunction with Garlic and Fenugreek tablets to provide a comprehensive and effective treatment. Both conditions will usually have developed over a long period of time and improvement therefore will be gradual but should be noticeable within a few weeks of starting treatment. It is recommended that the treatment dosages be given for at least an initial month's course if starting during the Summer, and a two month course if beginning in the colder, wetter Wintertime. As improvement is made the dosage can be reduced to the lower maintenance dose which can be continued for the rest of the animal's life if necessary, to control the conditions. Diet is important and the "Cleansing Corrective Diet" described in our Special Diet section should be followed during the initial period of treatment and dairy products and red meat should be omitted from the diet as these tend to aggravate arthritic conditions. Cod Liver Oil capsules are a useful supplement for stiff joints, particularly during the Wintertime. While looking at the diet, also remember that if your dog or cat is overweight this will lead to more stress being put on the joints. If your pet needs to lose weight, give Kelp Seaweed tablets throughout the dieting period to assist with weight loss.

To complement licensed medicines for arthritis (Garlic & Fenugreek tablets and Mixed Vegetable tablets) is the well known joint supplement Glucosamine. WWithout lots of 'extras' to this formulation a top quality supplement with pharmaceutical grade Glucosamine and marine based Chondroitin sulphate.

Dorwest - Coat and skin problems
A dull, thin, dry or scurfy coat may be the first outward sign of poor general health and overall condition should be looked at. However, to keep the coat in good condition, a comprehensive all round herbal supplement, such as Keeper's Mix , given in the diet, will help to maintain a strong, thick healthy coat. Adding appropriate oils into the feed will prevent dryness and maintain the healthy shine that is especially necessary on the soft, silky coated breeds. Wheatgerm Oil capsules are a Vitamin E supplement to maintain the skin in good health, whereas during the Winter months Cod Liver Oil is a beneficial addition to the diet. Evening Primrose Oil Liquid or Evening Primrose Oil Capsules are well known for promoting good quality coat growth, minimising moulting, rectifying dryness and maintaining good skin condition. Remember that there is no substitute for regular grooming to remove dead coat and to tone the skin, particularly during the moulting period.

How often you need to wash the coat will depend on the breed; long coats tend to attract more dust and dirt so will need more frequent attention but there are times when all animals benefit from a bath. Use our Pennyroyal Shampoo which is a very high quality product especially formulated for your pet that leaves a lovely minty aroma on the coat and helps to repel external parasites too.

Dorwest - Whelping
Unexpected difficulties can occur during gestation and delivery and veterinary assistance should be sought if there is any doubt or concern. However for bitches and queens who have previously experienced normal but prolonged or unduly extended labour, giving Raspberry Leaf tablets from the third week after mating until one week after delivery will strengthen the reproductive system and aid the birth process. Many owners and breeders over the years have reported normal easy births having taken place following the use of this traditional birth remedy. There are homoeopathic remedies that may also assist during delivery and to increase milk production afterwards, but should problems occur at any stage, always seek veterinary advice.

Dorwest - Nervousness
Many situations can make a dog or cat nervous - thunder, fireworks, strangers or simply a new experience are a few of the situations that can affect a nervous animal. Often the problem is not really nervousness but more the fear of exactly what is expected when a new situation or experience arises. This apprehensive behaviour is often noticeable in young dogs but with encouragement and appropriate treatment they will overcome this as they mature. Unfortunately this uncertainty can easily be transmitted from the owner, so behaving in a positive and encouraging manner is essential to instil confidence and security. Scullcap and Valerian tablets should be given to relax and calm the animal and so increase its confidence and concentration. The dosage of this tablet can be given at either the maintenance or treatment dose depending on the individual response. The length of time that they may need to be administered will also vary with each animal, but as there are no recorded adverse reactions or long time side effects associated with this herbal medicine, they can be given for as long as is necessary to overcome the problem and establish confidence.

OrganiPets - How do I change my dog onto OrganiPets organic complete dog food?
When changing your dog's diet, it is important to do it gradually over a period of up to seven days. This is necessary so that your dog's digestive system can become accustomed to the new food. Whether you're changing from canned food or from another dry food, start by mixing a small amount of the OrganiPets organic food with the previous food. Over the next few days, steadily increase the amount of the OrganiPets organic food while reducing the amount of the previous food, until you are feeding your dog entirely on the OrganiPets organic food. Changing gradually in this way should avoid any digestive upset and your dog should take readily to the new food.

OrganiPets - Does OrganiPets organic complete food contain any unhealthy artificial additives?
No, it does not. As well as being a hypo-allergenic food, OrganiPets is organic, natural and wholesome. Unlike some other brands of pet food, we do not add any artificial flavours, preservatives or colours.

OrganiPets - Does it matter if I moisten the food?
You can serve OrganiPets organic food either with or without added water in the bowl, according to your pet's preference.

For the best dental and oral hygiene, we recommend that OrganiPets organic food should be fed dry or lightly moistened, to allow the crunchy biscuits to clean your pet's teeth.
For added palatability, it is sometimes a good idea to add a small quantity of warm water to the dry food. This brings out the smell of the gravy, which many pets adore!

If your pet has tender teeth or gums, you can soak the food until it is soft before feeding.

Some dry dog foods recommend they are soaked before feeding as those foods can swell up when mixed with water in the dog's stomach. OrganiPets organic food does not swell up significantly when wetted, so this is not a problem with our food.

Always supply plenty of clean fresh drinking water at all times.

OrganiPets - How much should I be feeding my pet?
The correct amount of food to serve will be determined by your pets age, weight and activity level. Feeding guidelines for the different food varieties are included on each pack.
Does OrganiPets organic food or treats contain undesirable 'animal derivatives' e.g. beaks and feathers?
No, it does not. Unlike many other dog foods, we do not conceal our ingredients by listing them in mysterious categories like "meat and animal derivatives" or "derivatives of vegetable origin".

OrganiPets believes that to make the best food you need the best ingredients. We are very proud of the fact that we use only the highest quality ingredients and list them fully and clearly on our packs and literature.

OrganiPets - My pet is fussy, what do I do?
The main reason why a pet refuses food is that it is not hungry.

Some pets will eat anything and are quite happy to devour what's put in front of them, but some will show a reluctance to eat or simply turn up their noses and refuse certain foods. This can sometimes be a sign of intolerance to certain ingredients or they may find the food difficult to digest. Dogs and cats can also develop aversions to particular foods as they get older. All OrganiPets organic products are hypo-allergenic so they could be the answer to your pets needs.

OrganiPets - My pet is permanently hungry
The desire for food is often a conditioned one i.e. the pet has learned from past experience that if the owner is eating then the pet will be given food.
Sometimes there is no solution to this problem of feeling guilty that the pet is being deprived, however you must keep in mind that it is in the best interests of your pet not to over feed it, otherwise you could cause health problems.
The best way of dealing with this is by providing diversion and stimulation in the form of a walk or play. The more you give food on demand, the more your pet will expect it.

OrganiPets - Why does my dog eat grass?
When a dog wishes to vomit it will instinctively eat grass to help it discharge toxins from its system.

OrganiPets - My pet is sometimes sick and has diarrhoea but isn't ill, is it his diet?
Vomiting or diarrhoea is a way of discharging build ups of waste in the dog's system thus helping to cleanse the system. There may well be a sub-clinical disease present.
This behaviour is typically associated with feeding low-quality pet food; changing to a better feeding regime will usually solve the problem.
What should I do if my pet is not eating well, is over eating or has any other feeding problems?
If you suspect your cat or dog has feeding problems, or you are worried about their health, then the best thing to do is to consult a vet.
Here are some great sources of advice for caring for your pet.

Kronch Basic, Active and Optimal are healthy and tasty complete products of the highest quality based on fresh salmon.

Kronch - Why is salmon a very important fat and protein source for your dog?
Salmon as a source of fat.
Fat is your dogs most important source of energy. It ensures that your dog receives the essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which is necessary for maintaining your dogs body functions.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oils, especially in fat saltwater fish, including salmon. Compared with other fish, salmons has one of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids. The health enhancing effect of omega-3 fatty acids have been found to be connected with two fatty acids called EPA (eicosapentaenacid) and DHA (docosahexaenacid). These two fatty acids are only found in salmon oil and not anywhere else in nature. Salmon is also a natural source of omega-6 fatty acids.

When salmon is used as a fat source, the important omega-3 and -6 fatty acids found in salmon are transferred to the product. Our products high omega-6 fatty acid content not only helps strengthen your dogs skin and coat, but also neutralizes common problems such as allergies, dry skin, hair loss, itch, scalp, and dull fur. Our products high omega-3 fatty acid content strengthens the immunesystem, increases fertility, and reduces the risk of heart disease.

Salmon as a source of protein.
When digested, the proteins are converted to amino acids. Amino acids are absorbed in bloodstream, and distributed throughout the body, where it is used for building, maintaining, and repairing skin, muscles, bones, and internal organs.

Dogs need many different amino acids, and it is very important that the ones dogs don't make themselves are supplied in their food. There are ten essential amino acids that dogs are unable make themselves. If even one of the ten essential amino acids are missing, the remaining nine will be respirated as energy and will not aid the body in building, maintaining, or repairing body tissue. As a result, muscle growth may come to a halt.

Salmon proteins contain many essential amino acids. When salmon is used as a source of protein, your dog receives the amino acids it needs. Salmon proteins have a very biological value, which indicates how many proteins, in reality, your dog can utilize. Salmon proteins have a biological value of about 94%, which is very high compared with other animal sources of protein. This ensures an easily digestible product with a high utilization rate, which results in lower food consumption and fewer excrements.

Salmon alone naturally isn't enough.
Which is why our product is composed of the best quality controlled raw materials and correctly balanced with nutritional substances, vitamins, and minerals.

To the product is added cholin chloride and lecitine, which help increase the dogs ability to digest and absorb fats. As a result, the dog absorbs the energy in the food more easily, which leads to lower food consumption.

Garlic is added to our product as it is a natural product with health enhancing properties. Garlic improves the intestinal flora, strengthens blood circulation, and prevents worm attacks. On some dogs, it even helps reduce flea, and tick attacks.
